deodorant

Some people like to use natural deodorant and antiperspirants because of new research about toxic ingredients in national store brand types. If you want to make sure you are using something safe, but don't want to make your own, go shopping at your local health food stores for natural deodorants. The one major ingredient that is proven harmful is Alum (Aluminum Zirconium) - so look for that on labels - even at health food stores.

Antiperspirants have ingredients that help reduce the pore size and therefore lessens perspiration. This sounds great, but it does stop the natural moisture release that our bodies are made to perform. So, deodorant is the choice of many....Deodorants will kill the 'odor-causing' bacteria that is on our skin - therefore eliminating body odor.

Below are a couple recipes to make your own deodorants and antiperspirant.

Deodorant Cream

1/4 cup white vegetable shortening
1 1/4 tsp cornstarch
1/8 tsp tincture of benzoin
2 tsp baking soda
10 drops essential oil (optional)

Mix all ingredients thoroughly in a bowl and transfer into a jar with lid. To use, apply a small amount under your arms and rub in very well.

*If you have sensitive skin, omit the essential oil.

* This is good for those who have sensitive skin and or dry skin (good in dry climates or during the winter).

*You can find tincture of benzoin at your local health food store.

Witch Hazel Spray

2/3 cups witch hazel
2 cups vodka
1 1/2 tsp glycerine
1/2 tsp liquid chlorophyll

Mix all the ingredients together with a whisk and transfer into a small spray bottle (best application method). If you don't want to spray it on, you can use cotton pads or cotton balls).

* You can find liquid chlorophyl at your local drug or grocery store.
