The following list is for the tools commonly used when
making skin care products. You will most likely not need each and
every one. This is just to help you figure out what you may really
need to get started.
Always remember to clean your equipment after each use. Make sure
they get thoroughly clean. This is important to keep your cosmetics
fresh and free of foreign materials that will do more harm than anything.
Measuring
Cups (dry and liquid)...make sure you have
good quality measuring cups to give you the most accurate measurements.
A little too much water in a lotion recipe can make it too water
and it won't set properly. Stainless steel may be better than some
cheaper plastic ones.
Measuring
Spoons...as with measuring cups, get good
quality spoons to assure accurate measurements.
Bowls...glass
bowls for heating products in the microwave
and for mixing lotions, creams, etc.
Cheese
Grater...for grating beeswax and soap.
Spray with cooking oil before grating. This will make clean up a
little easier (but it is still tough to remove all the beeswax).
Blender...for
a faster method of mixing - this blender should
not be used for anything other than making these products - designate
a separate one for foods and drinks.
Stirring
Utensils...either a knife, spoon, popsicle
stick, chopsticks, etc. Anything clean to stir your mixtures, especially
while using the water bath method.
Coffee
Grinder...for
grinding oatmeal, citrus peels, etc.
Whisk,
blender, hand-mixer...for mixing lotions
and creams.
Containers...bottles,
jars, spritzer, pump bottles.
Use these for storing your products. You can even buy these type
of cosmetic containers at retail stores (try the
container store). You can also get online and find companies
that sell these type containers to the public. There are hundreds
out there, but you may have to buy in bulk to purchase from them.
Funnels...for
pouring your products into bottles with small openings.
Pot
Holders...for handling the hot glass when
doing water baths.
Apron...to
avoid getting oil and other ingredients all over your clothes. The
oil will most likely not come out.
Eye
Droppers...for
adding essential oils to products.
