suggestions for different window effects

Curtains aren't just for blocking the sun anymore! There not just for privacy either...

While we still use curtains and different window coverings for this puprose - it is only part of the reason. They have become an accessory when decorating a room. Window treatments are now in the same class as a piece of furniture: they not only look good, but they have many different functions as well.

When finding out what kind of window treatment you want for you home - ask yourself, "What is the function of the window?" And always let your imagination free - if you have an idea, but have never seen it done before - don't let that shy you away. There is no right or wrong (just make sure it looks good!).

It may be a window that doesn't necessarily need to be covered because it doesn't let in too much sun and heat. But it is big enough - that leaving it 'naked' makes the room unattractive. You may want to have a window covering that adds to the style or theme of that room, or you may just want something that simple and softens the lines of the window.

In this case you can do a variety of things:

  • One idea is to frame the window (on the inside to give it an 'older' feeling. You will see this done in many old, victorian homes. Use wood (usually 1" thick by the width you desire), and finish the edges using a router. By choosing the right bit, you can make it look classic, simple, elegant, old world, etc. You can even 'flute' the wood making it look like pillars. To give the frame a more finished look, use square rosettes in the corners. While stained wood looks best, the frame and rosettes can be painted. Using a color different that that of the wall will make it stand out and give it a stronger appearance. Do it the same color as your baseboard and casing if those are painted. Two toned rooms look very finished.

Now, this is a great way to liven up your window - but this won't actually have any effect of covering the actual window, so you will still need to add curtains or shades.

  • If you want to use curtains to add to the style of your room - you can do just about anything. Using brighter or darker colors than that of the wall will brighten up the room, and if you choose a color that is found in a pillow or chair or accessory - then the curtains will help draw that color out of that particular piece of furniture. It is important to make sure the color of curtains or shades you use incorporate and are consistant with that of the room to make the effect a positive one.

  • If you want to do something that will soften the lines of the window, it's best to use a simple curtain made from a light or sheer fabric. If you want to make them yourself an inexpensive fabric to use for window coverings is muslin. Unbleached tends to look better - but the bleached can be used. They have a very 'soft' look and even when shut allow light to come in - but it is diffuses. It gives the room a nice glow. When buying muslin, make sure you get extra to make up for shrinkage when you wash them. Note that most muslin, when washed, tends to have a slight 'wrinkle' to it. If dried properly and in a timely manner - this can look nice and give it a 'rippled' effect. There are some suppliers who do sell muslin that is 'wrinkle free'. But any light or sheer fabric works great if all you're wanting is a simple, soft look. Note: Muslin can be dyed if you want color, but still want to use this type of material.
