When
it comes to addressing invitations for special events such as
weddings or anniversary celebrations, the etiquette for it isn't
always clear. How do you address it if it's to someone in the
Military? A doctor? In this section you will find some tips that
will help you make your invitations classy and with a finished
look as well as show you the proper way to address your invitation
envelopes. These are only guidelines are remind you to feel free
to be creative and use your own style.
OUTER
ENVELOPES
There
are many different ways to address the outer envelope for an invitation
and I will show you several.
Main
points to remember:
- Spell out street names, no abbreviations (looks more 'finished').
- Use correct titles for those you are sending the invitation
to.
- Make sure your address is correct - so it does not get returned
to you.
- Make it legible (if doing them by hand), so the postmaster can
easily identify the correct location.
INNER
ENVELOPES
The
inner envelopes will have just the names on them. Some people
choose to stick with formality and continue to use Mr. and Mrs.
or Miss. Some just use first names. That will be up to your discretion
and your familiarity with your guests.
On
the inner envelope, if the invitation is for an entire family
including children, this is where you will address all the names
of those invited. Where as on the outer envelope you will only
put Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Family. So, on the inner envelope you
would put 'Steve, Sally, Chad, Megan, Robin' (if using first names
only).
Inner
envelopes should be in the same handwriting or print as the outer
envelope.
