9-12 months before:

  • Choose a wedding date. This one decision (of month and season) will affect the following other areas:
    -Style of wedding
-Type of gown and bridal attire
    -Availability of fresh flowers
    -Indoor/Outdoor ceremony
    -Budget planning
    -Travel options for guests

  • Figure out what style of wedding you want. Small or big, formal or casual, etc. Start big, then scale down to fit your budget.

  • Choose your bridal party.

  • Announce your engagement! How can you keep something so wonderful a secret?!

  • Create the budget.

  • Choose ceremony and reception sites and reserve them. Do this as early as possible. They book up fast.

  • Pick colors of the wedding, so any early preperations can be made.

  • Plan a guest list. Start with all those you want to have attend, then revise to meet budget, location size, etc. (Read our article Do I Have to Invite Everyone I Have Ever Known to My Wedding?)

  • Begin to shop for rings and settings.

  • Choose a wedding gown and accessorites (veil, shoes, etc.) and begin to look for bridesmaids' attire. Choosing the wedding gown as early on is helpful to allow for alterations.

  • Begin 'researching' photographers / videographers and choose who you want to do your wedding. Make sure you get referrals and see their work. For a list of questions to ask your photographer - read "Questions To Ask Your Vendors".

  • Find a caterer, if the reception site does not offer one.

  • Make an appointment with officiant or priest and make necessary arrangements for ceremony and / or pre-marital classes (often necessary when performed at a church).

  • Plan your honeymoon.

  • Choose DJ or live band, reserve them for your wedding day.
